Maximise Your LinkedIn Impact: Tips for Women in Small Business

As a woman in a small business, LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools you have to grow your network, educate your community and potential clients about your services, and build brand awareness.

However, many business owners either overlook LinkedIn or feel unsure about how to use it effectively.

The good news? You don’t need to spend hours on LinkedIn to see results. By focusing on three simple activities each week, you can make meaningful connections, establish your expertise, and contribute to the success of others.

Why LinkedIn Matters for Small Business Owners

Unlike other social media platforms, LinkedIn is a professional networking platform designed for meaningful conversations, industry insights, and business growth. It allows you to:

  • Expand your network by connecting with potential clients, collaborators, and industry peers.
  • Educate your audience by sharing valuable insights about your services and expertise.
  • Build brand awareness in an authentic and thoughtful way.
  • Support others by engaging with their content and offering encouragement.

If LinkedIn is where your potential clients and referral network are active, let’s explore the three key things you can do each week to maximise your presence.

1. Engage Thoughtfully with Your Network (10 Minutes a Day)

One of the easiest and most effective ways to build your presence on LinkedIn is to engage with other people’s content. This doesn’t mean mindlessly scrolling—it means thoughtfully interacting with your network.

Here’s how to do it well:

  • Like and comment on posts that resonate with you. A thoughtful comment (rather than a simple “Great post!”) helps spark meaningful conversations.
  • Celebrate others by reacting to their career milestones, work anniversaries, and business achievements.
  • Share insights by reposting valuable content with your perspective. If you read an article or watch a video that could benefit your audience, share it with a few lines about why it matters.

By engaging consistently, you stay top of mind with your network and establish yourself as a thoughtful contributor to your industry.

2. Post Once a Week to Share Your Knowledge and Build Trust

Many small business owners feel overwhelmed at the thought of posting regularly on LinkedIn. The truth is, you don’t need to post every day—just once a week can make a big impact.

Not sure what to post? Try one of these approaches:

  • Share a client success story (with their permission) to showcase the impact of your work.
  • Educate your audience by explaining a key concept, answering a common question, or offering a useful tip.
  • Talk about lessons learned from running a small business—the highs, the challenges, and everything in between.
  • Show behind-the-scenes moments to make your business feel more relatable.

Authenticity is key. Your audience wants to hear from you in a way that feels real and engaging, not overly polished or salesy. Sure, use ChatGPT or CoPilot, but start with your own words first and then refine.

3. Strengthen Your Network with One New Connection Each Week

Expanding your LinkedIn network doesn’t mean adding people at random. It’s about building relationships with the right people—potential clients, industry peers, and those who inspire you.

Each week, aim to:

  • Review the list of One Roof members and invite at least one of them to connect. If LinkedIn restricts connection requests (it does for free memberships), try following those who post regularly. Many with LinkedIn Premium will send an invite back.
  • Reconnect with an existing contact by sending a message to check in or share a helpful resource.
  • Follow a thought leader in or beyond your industry.

The more intentional you are with networking, the more LinkedIn becomes a space for meaningful opportunities and conversations.

The Bigger Picture: Building a Sustainable LinkedIn Habit

Consistency is key. Even if you start small—spending just 10-15 minutes a day on LinkedIn—these actions compound over time. You’ll notice more engagement, more connections, and ultimately, more opportunities for your business.

We thrive when we support each other. LinkedIn is not just a place to promote your own work; it’s a space to uplift others, share knowledge, and be part of a bigger professional community.

Start this week by choosing just one of these three actions. The more you practise, the more confident and comfortable you’ll feel using LinkedIn as a valuable tool for business growth.
